and the upper chamber. >> but he has such a strong personal relationship with lindsay graham, and lindsay graham is so personally invested in his 2014 re-election and being seen as the guy who is fighting the obama administration on this, so i kind of feel like -- it's just a guess, but my thought is that graham will eventually drop it. that will allow mccain to drop it. that will allow them to follow suit. then you have a new precedent. let's say you get to the floor with this vote, and it's 55-45 or 57-43. a party line vote is not entirely new, but that's close to a new phenomenon too for defense secretary for a cabinet nominee, and if that becomes the new rule for cabinet nominees going forward, what happens when the next president comes along and his or her party does not control the senate. if that's the new norm that's established, you have a big problem there. >> oh. >> no different from the senate. remember, john mccain was the guy who negotiated that deal to stop the nuclear option before? remember, he was the one that stood in the way of the very idea of filibustering cabinet nominees,

. i think lindsay graham and others have real concerns and should have their questions answered. they'll be answered today and could have been prior to today. this is to shut up debate and move the issue forward. i agree with lindsay, providing those questions are answered, he'll get a full and fair vote probably after they come back from recess. >> there are two sets of questions, one is on what the administration did about bin gaza and others concern financial issues that came up in senator hagel's confirmation hearing. how much of a delay or distraction or risk will be this be for hagel? >> the bottom line is the senators have the right to inquire and do due diligence and be satisfied before they vote. when secretary pan leon panetta, i voted for him. there's a process. when it's fully adhered to, he'll move forward. >> neil: do you think something went wrong or do you think the administration, rather than appoint a maverick like chuck hagel, it would be an easy slam dunk through the senate. yet the confirmation hearing got to be contentious. what happened? >> bottom line is people

, governor rendell. lindsay graham has been having meetings with the tea partiers, the club for growth. he is intent on solidifying the political base because he is worried about the next election, and if lindsey graham wasn't so worried, maybe there would be more bipartisanship in the upper chamber, and maybe all these legislative -- this kabuk eh dance would never happen brsh. >> that's a hard thinking to do anything about. we had a chance to do something about a procedure that is dysfunctional and basically flawed, and we democrats took a pass on it. i go back to that. we're responsible for this. as to glen's point, glen, i brae agree with you. this was an isolated incident. it's not that big a deal. it's playing out at the same time when you have the head of the nra absolutely delivering one of the most racial overtoned, insane -- >> screeds, i have seen. not one republican standing up and saying this guy is nuts. we don't agree with anything he wrote. we're going to make our decision based on what's right for the american people, but this guy is nuts, and we just -- >> i told you -- i

here. what this is about john mccain and lindsay graham, and they just don't like chuck hagel and that's what's driving this process more than anything else. personal differences more than real policy substance right now. >> my thanks to our special valentine's day panel. keith gets the prize for wearing red today. thank you so much. i went a little more cupid-y with mine. thanks so much. >> thank you. >>> if you work full-time, you shouldn't be in poverty. >> waging war over minimum wage. the president wants to raise it, but there's already some pushback from republicans. we are sounding off on that next. >>> plus, an olympic athlete and parolympic star. the details ahead. and our question of the day, is the nra's wayne lapierre hurting the republican party? we've all had those moments. when you lost the thing you can't believe you lost. when what you just bought, just broke. or when you have a little trouble a long way from home... as an american express cardmember you can expect some help. but what you might not expect, is you can get all this with a prepaid card. spends like cash.

and give lindsay graham more of what he wants if not all of what he wants, more of what he wants as it relates to the specific timeline on benghazi, and then almost certainly the hagel nomination goes forward, or we will not and to be honest, andrea, the way that politics works, i'm not sure that if there isn't -- harry weed comes out and says there's going to be a vote foam, if they put it off, they go out of session for a week and come back. i don't know if chuck hagel is able politically only, politically speaking only, to survive that. i think that's the calculation the white house is making right now as if you don't give in in some regard you clearly imperil chuck hagel's no, ma'am nation. not to say you doom it, but you imperil it because it makes that 60 votes harder to get to. if have you to put it off, politics being -- politics as a vacuum, you'll have more and more doubt flood in the longer you delay thee thipgsz. they know all this, and i think they'll probably try to decide. should they give something to lindsey graham, and what should it be? >> is there much to give

political cause than help the president. >> you have lindsay graham, john mccain and marco rubio, someone who tried in fact last year, couldn't get mitt romney to sign off on a plan and then the president came in with the dream act and trumped all of them. so there is some momentum now on the republican side on that. what about guns? >> guns, that's the sticking point. you look at that through -- even in the early 1970s, richard nixon said privately if it were up to him i would outlaw, he said, every pistol in the country. he was strongly for gun control, though he didn't do much about that in public. >> michael beschloss, it's always great to have your perspective. >> thank you. >> call it a marsupial flash mob. the first round of play at the women's australian open was interrupted incredibly thursday by a herd -- is that the correct term -- a herd of galloping kangaroos. they didn't tear up the green, we're told.
